How to Choose a Good Beard Shampoo and Conditioner

Beard shampoo vs regular Hair shampoo – knowing the difference is imperative to understanding the importance of a good beard shampoo.

Most hair shampoos are far too harsh on beards, they can leave your beard & skin dry. Beard shampoos are formulated differently from regular hair shampoos.

Read the label on the back before you purchase any shampoo! You can learn a lot by reading and researching the ingredients. Stay away from any Shampoo that has the following ingredients listed on the label.

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) and sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES) – This damaging detergent penetrates the surface of your skin and disrupts your natural oils, which can trigger serious beard and skin irritation. The purpose of these sulfates is to create a lathering effect. If your shampoo easily makes a lather in the shower, there’s a good chance it contains sulfates. Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) is banned in the EU because it is a known skin irritant; in fact, cosmetic companies even use it to induce irritation when conducting trials. Keep your skin soft and itch-free by avoiding this ingredient.

Parabens – These preservatives have been linked to allergies and irritating your scalp, fading your color, and even hair loss. Since they are generally unsafe, it is best to avoid shampoo with parabens.

Ideally, the best shampoo for your beard will be a natural one containing many natural ingredients, vitamins, and soothing oils.

Our Beards Australia Wash Shampoo is 100% NATURAL and proudly made in Australia from the purest unrefined oils.

• Coconut Oil
• Sunflower Oil
• Castor Oil
• 100% biodegradable
• No synthetic detergents
• No animal ingredients
• Not tested on animals
• No preservatives
• No Synthetic Foaming Agents
• No Thickeners
Our beard shampoo base is free from the usual foaming agents used in the more commercial shampoos, like cocobetaine, decyl glucocide, sodium laurel sulphate, free from detergents, thickeners, animal fats (making it suitable for vegans), and preservatives, all known skin irritants, making our base non-allergenic and 100% biodegradable.
Unlike industrially made liquid detergents made from petrochemicals, or coconut derivatives, our natural beard shampoo made from edible oils is always golden yellow to orange in color and it may appear “ runny”. Do not let this thinner consistency trick you into believing it is not concentrated enough, as it is usually more foamy than most soap substitutes.
Our shampoo base has its glycerin retained. Glycerin is a natural humectant or moisturizer, due to its water-building capabilities, that allow it to draw and absorb water from the air. Chemically speaking glycerin is a by-product of the saponification (soap-making) process.
A note on our shampoo:
After many years of commercial shampoos, your beard may require a few weeks before adjusting to the natural formulations of a handmade shampoo base. For instance, it is normal that hair might appear greasier and feel heavier after the first few uses, this is an indication that the shampoo is slowly dissolving the buildup left by commercial products and these symptoms will slowly disappear.
