About Beards Australia
Hi, I’m Denise Langtip, the founder of Beards Australia. This journey started when my husband decided to grow a beard. Like any supportive wife, I headed to the supermarket to find him some beard oil and beard wash. But as I picked up the bottles and started reading the labels, I was shocked.
The ingredients sounded more like a chemistry experiment than something you’d want on your skin. It reminded me of the 1970s—yes, I’ve been around a while—and how many products we once thought were safe were later banned due to links to cancer and other health issues.
So, I did what any curious (and slightly suspicious) person would do: I turned to Google. One ingredient kept popping up—Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) and its close cousin Sodium Laureth Sulfate. These harsh chemicals are found not just in shampoo and beard wash, but in everything from toothpaste and makeup remover to laundry detergent and even engine degreaser. Yikes.
Why are they so common? Because they make products foam.
But here’s the problem: SLS can irritate your skin, strip your hair and beard of natural oils, cause frizz and dryness, and even contribute to conditions like eczema, dermatitis, and hair loss. It’s no surprise SLS is banned in the EU, yet it’s still widely used in Australia.
Take a moment to check the labels in your own bathroom. You might be surprised by what you find.
That’s why I created Beards Australia. Our mission is simple: to offer truly natural grooming products you can trust. Our Beard Wash Shampoo is made from only a few gentle ingredients:

What Chemicals Are We Living With?
Back in the early 1970s, I started a pest control business called Crystal Clear Pest Control, named after my first daughter, Kristel. At the time, the chemicals we were spraying in and around Aussie homes were called Heptachlor and Dieldrin.
Now, here’s the scary part — these chemicals had already been banned in the USA because of how harmful they were to people’s health. But in Australia? They were still being used for years. It wasn’t until the 1980s that we finally banned them here, also.
Dieldrin is particularly nasty. It sticks to soil and doesn’t break down easily — in fact, it can stay in the ground for 30 to 50 years. So if it was used under a house decades ago, it could still be there today.
You’ve probably heard of Asbestos poisoning, right? The USA banned asbestos in new homes in 1989, but Australia didn’t ban it in new home builds until 2003 — more than a decade later!
It really makes you wonder: What chemicals are we using today that might turn out to be dangerous in the future?
One example already raising concerns is Roundup — a common weedkiller. There was a major class action here in Australia, where people claimed that using Roundup gave them non-Hodgkin lymphoma, a type of cancer. But in January 2024, the Federal Court dismissed the case.
Still, it’s worth thinking about. Just because a product is legal now doesn’t always mean it’s safe long-term. If history has taught us anything, it’s that sometimes we don’t learn the dangers of these chemicals until it’s too late. That’s why I am so passionate about my Beards Australia products being created naturally with absolutely no chemicals.
